The forgotten origins of Memorial Day

Summary

During the final year of the Civil War, Confederate soldiers used a racetrack as a prison for Union troops, resulting in the deaths of 260 soldiers who were initially buried in a mass grave. African Americans later honored these fallen soldiers by reinterring them in proper graves, creating a memorial with an archway inscribed "Martyrs of the Racecourse" and organizing a profound commemorative parade on May 1st involving 10,000 people, including black children, women, men, and Union infantry. This event is considered one of the most significant origins of Memorial Day, featuring powerful elements like scripture readings, patriotic songs, and a community-wide remembrance that concluded with communal picnics.
